Sunken Isles | 5e Adventure Campaign & Rules Supplement

The Sunken Isles project has been created in consultation with Honua Consulting and Purple Mai'a to ensure that all cultural sensitivity due diligence has been considered and addressed. 

Since Manaki and its cultures don’t customarily use gold when trading, the party needs a new way to acquire and upgrade their equipment. Player Characters can harvest and trade resources around the island, and similar to familiar classics, you can craft anything from simple weapons to complete sailing boats.

We wanted to explore the idea of directly integrating sailing into normal combat, so that transitioning from the open sea to a battle with ghost pirates is as seamless as conversation to combat. We’ll be adding sailing actions in a way that’s akin to legendary and bonus actions, with unique jobs that both players and NPCs can take on and help perform. Additionally, to cut down on directionless days passing as the party sails the open sea we’ll be adding tables for each of the major aspects of sailing: weather conditions, trip quality, and a diverse set of encounters that change over time!

This 5th Edition adventure gives you and your players 20 weeks to save the isles from complete annihilation. Each week can take one or several sessions, with the characters levelling up at the end of each week. The islands in the book and each adventure are designed to compensate for the party’s growing strength, and some enemies and NPCs grow alongside the party

Players will have the option to play as one of several races introduced in the adventure. The Decapodians, a race of crustaceans that features both lobster-like and mantis shrimp humanoids. The Kia’i, aquatic defenders of the ocean who have sworn to protect it from the activities in the overworld. The Mirescales, a race of small dinosaur humanoids that were created from a twist of fate of wild natural magic. All of these are fully fleshed out, including several new island themed backgrounds! 

 This incredibly beautiful cultural practice is something we’d like to have present in the adventure. In addition to traditional kakau tattoos that pertain to one’s personal past, Manaki islanders as well as their Ikolf counterparts practice the application of magical tattoos. These tattoos infuse spirits of immortal meaning onto a person's body, granting them unique powers. There are a handful of tattoo artist NPCs that the party can seek out to receive tattoos of their own, each with styles pertaining to their own culture!

Sunken Isles is a unique adventure, as the party can choose between two or more adventure paths each week. However, the story changes entirely depending on which route you and your party take, with both rewards and consequences resulting from their choices. The adventurers can face off against enemies early, save entire settlements from sinking islands, or recruit powerful allies. 

The Isles of Manaki are a cluster of islands created by a roaming deity that has been cast into the ocean of a foreign world and left to grow on its own. Each island was forged using the blood of this divine being, and the strength of its magic is apparent across the isles. Plants grow suddenly and without explanation, wild creatures are abundant and fantastical, and the people native to this strange land can speak with authority to nature itself. This is because everything in the isles can be considered a living spirit, all of which are designed to work in a harmonious and communal way.

Be thrust into an adventure with a volcanic spirit, an undead dwarven king, a pirate, an ancient native and the forces of the deity itself. Each of these forces immediately sets out with their own plans, and it’s up to you and your players to gather the same amount of forces as they do. You and your players can collect powerful crew members as they sail, make alliances with hidden cultures and get aid from godlike half-immortal beings. In the final days of the isles, a war is waged based on the party’s choices.

Trisha Kehaulani Watson, J.D., Ph.D., was born and raised in Mānoa, Hawaiʻi. She earned a B.A. in Sociology and American Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1999. Her M.A. is from Washington State University in American Studies where she wrote her thesis on environmental justice on Oʻahu’s Leeward Coast. She earned a J.D. and environmental law certificate from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi in 2003 where she focused on non-profit organizations, civil rights and environmental law.

Island Folk Miniature Set

This set of five miniatures includes members of the many diverse inhabitants of the Sunken Isles. Featuring one dinosaur-like Mirescale, two of the crustation-like Decapodians, and two of the graceful merfolk known as the Kia'I; This set covers some of the new playable species exclusive to the Sunken Isles setting that can be used as your player's character miniatures as well.

All of the miniatures in these sets are set to 32mm scale, made of quality hard plastic, and range from 25mm to 60mm in height. No assembly will be required; however, painting will be – as each miniature will arrive in a solid grey color.

Purchasing add-ons are the best way for you to get any extra items you want on top of your pledge at a discounted rate! Anyone who backs our project will also have access to The Seeker's Guide to Twisted Taverns and Stibbles' Codex of Companions add-ons. At the conclusion of our Kickstarter, we will be sending out surveys through BackerKit and this will be your time to select any additional items you're wanting to add to your pledge. Please note, shipping costs for these extra products will be determined after the Kickstarter, however at this stage we anticipate shipping to be approximately $3-$7 per add-on. Any items added from The Seeker's Guide to Twisted Taverns and Stibbles' Codex of Companions will be shipped with your Sunken Isles pledge items.

Setting stretch-goals give us the opportunity to build on the already wondrous content that awaits in the Sunken Isles, whilst also giving us the chance to give back to our community. As some stretch goals come at a greater expense than others, this means that not all of these can come as a free addition. In light of this, any stretch goals that have the text "ADD-ON" next to it, mean they will be available for purchase to all backers, should you choose to add them to your pledge.

We do not charge shipping through Kickstarter; this will be calculated through a third-party organization called BackerKit once surveys have been sent and dimensions/weights have been confirmed.

Please note, once you've made your pledge there will be a charge saying "$0.00 for shipping" - that is from Kickstarter only and shipping will be charged through BackerKit once the Kickstarter has ended.

Some of our products are still in the production phase, which means as soon as their available weights and dimensions are available, the shipping price will be entered into your BackerKit survey. We design and manufacture our products internationally and will always aim to keep shipping prices as low as possible for our backers.

The writing phase of Sunken Isles is well and truly underway, and providing a Playtest gives our community the ultimate insight into what's to come. Once this is available, we will post a Kickstarter update with instructions on how our backers will be able to access this. We're glad that we can give backers the opportunity to contribute feedback to the final product they will soon have in their hands and we're so pleased to involve backers in the process!
